VOICE: A Physical Approach to Freeing Your
Voice & Finding Your Music |
Do you wrestle
with self-consciousness when singing? Have you ever wondered what
your voice might sound like or be capable of if you truly let
it go without fear of sounding right? In these weekly
workshop sessions we will explore the full range of our speaking
and singing voices in a safe and supportive space free from the
social constraints in which we normally experience our voices.
We will explore the full gamut of sounds from the "ugly"
to the "beautiful" in search of the sounds that are
uniquely OURS, beginning with the basics of sound making and working
our way toward improvising with our bodies and voices, developing
our ability to spontaneously create sound, music, and song. Through
physical exercises in breath, presence, rhythm, harmony, and polyphony
we will approach our voices as natural expressions of and extensions
of our physical bodies and move towards greater flexibility, power,
and abandon.
Suitable
for anyone curious about their voice and committed to exploring
it with a little sweat. Please come dressed to move.
These
programs are designed for adult learners but are also suitable
for teenagers (15+).

THE FACILITATOR:
SaRAH!
Kocz is a teaching-artist committed to finding and sharing the creative
freedom that comes from integrating our whole selves in art-making
and life-making, voice, body, mind, spirit and all. The spelling
of her name is a reminder not to be quieted by the world. She believes
in using art for social change and has been the recipient of a Robert
C. Bryan Public Service Fellowship and a Presidential Service Award
supporting her innovative theatre work with local communities. A
graduate of UNC, the British American Drama Academy, and the Moscow
Art Theatre School USA, she has also studied at the Dell'Arte International
School of Physical Theatre in CA and with Teatr Piesn Kozla (Song
of the Goat Theatre) at the Grotowski Centre in Poland. When she
is not teaching training ensemble-ing or otherwise attempting to
perpetuate her love affair with higher education and ensemble theatre,
she can be seen playing on area stages. Recent work includes: Womens
Minyan, The Miser, White People, As You Like It, Twilight (StreetSigns);
Taking Sides, Lonesome West, RIME: Woman, Bird and Beast, and her
one-woman performance, Finding Beulah Mae (Wordshed Productions);
The Last Two Minutes of the Complete Works of Ibsen (Manbites Dog).
SaRAH! will be returning to Poland this winter to immerse herself
in the physically and musically rich traditions of Polish ensemble
theatre after which she will return to StreetSigns to develop new
work using this approach.
